You might find Gary Vaynerchuk's "Marketers Ruin Everything" concept relevant to the memes/brands things, if you want the perspective of someone who is trying to monetize digital culture. He's a digital marketing expert and that is one of his key concepts - marketers will always step in and drain things dry. The first time you got a Groupon, it was great, so everyone started doing that, and within a year, nobody was willing to pay full price because something else was half-off, and businesses stopped offering those deals because it wasn't making anyone but Groupon any money. The first time a brand had a sarcastic Twitter feed, it was amazing. The hundredth time... it's kind of awful. And so on.
