Pretty sure most of the reason Twitter eats battery is because it loads basically every resource you see on the screen even if you don't interact with it. Images, videos, gifs, all download as you scroll.

This is philosophically the same issue as "apps today use too much memory", and it's caused by a general disinterest in problems that users don't normally notice.

I’m going to guess that it’s fine-grained location-tracking. I bet if it’s turned off, the app becomes average.

Reading the GPS takes basically nothing. Even a completely offline map app like Osmand actually recording a GPX of your movement (and writing to flash *does* take significant energy) takes up less power than Twitter.

It’s reporting the location to Twitter that takes up the power. Sorry if that wasn’t clear to you.

I looked at my battery health indicator and Twitter is not using a measurable amount of my battery, probably because I no longer look at Twitter. Highly recommended

Uhh Twitter is 36% of usage on 45m on screen for me. Not great.

This is intriging. I have been hyper-wary of old Mr. Jack but it is good I guess to keep an open mind.

Anybody thinking Bluesky is a good thing learned fuckall from Twitter.

I am not ready to write it off yet, but am very skeptical.

I wrote it off, for good reason, the moment they started taking users with no effective means to moderate or block people.
