Deleted all my social media about a year ago but this newsletter helps me feel like I’m still chronically online <3 except I don’t have mental health problems from ig and tiktok anymore so I’d say I’m winning thank u garbage day 🙏

I'd argue anybody who gets super hung up on continuing their bloodline really doesn't deserve to procreate.

The online right started getting worked up endlessly about gender around the time of gamergate, and it infiltrated IRL politics. Now the online right has been obsessed with having babies for the last couple years, and I'm wondering with the next GOP presidential candidate will suggest a "family requirement" to get your tax returns or some BS like that.

Unrelated, I lucked out and got a working Bluesky invite code from another Substack (Fingers by Dave Infante - check it out if your interested in journalism about the alcohol industry: fingers.email). I now have a code of my own to share: bsky-social-w4gez-3ybem

Man, you're just desperate for the internet to gave a main character, never mind that whole concept was manufactured clickbait for Twitter in the first place.

The lack of main character when there isn't a headline breaking the internet kinda makes the fediverse feel much more authentic than the outrage engine driven alternatives.

Talking about the vapor web - I love the idea - it makes me think a lot about the « liquid society » as explained by Zygmunt Baumann. There’s no point to create content, because nothing sticks anymore. What was the last story/video you saw? Hard to say…

I owned the previous generation of the Meta smart glasses and bought the new ones last week - the improvement in every aspect of the thing blew my mind.

Pictures were just okay before but they look great now. The sound is also better. They also come in many different styles now. I do think the new Meta Ray-Ban smartglasses might be the ones that take smartglasses as a thing mainstream.

> I also hope they don’t end with just camera glasses and we actually get something with a workable HUD display.

This is eye-wateringly difficult to do, unfortunately. It's not a question of whether companies want to make these or not: they absolutely do, but they can't. There are at least 10 technologies that need to be an order of magnitude better than they are now for real AR glasses to work well enough that people could or would use them. Facebook, Microsoft, and Apple have all poured billions into this for the last decade (so has Google, via Magic Leap) and the state of the art devices are: Hololens 2, these Ray-ban glasses, and the Vision Pro. That's the best it's possible to do right now, and it'll be many years before they can do any better. And that's if they continue to pour billions into it, which they don't look like they're planning to do; they're all pivoting hard to generative AI instead.

It's getting to the point where I just want to mute the question mark on Twitter. I cannot handle all the engagement bait!

I only have X to open links and search for stuff if needed. I don’t follow anyone. The “For You” is genuinely psychotic. I’ve opened the app maybe 10x in the last month and two of those times the first video I saw was of someone being shot. There are tons of fight videos too. Very strange.

Can you imagine if the Suez Yellow Fleet had had TikTok?!?

(Also you have to wonder if the sailors stranded together for eight years were all fucking each other.)

I’ve found recently that if you watch the cute animal videos the YouTube gives you, YouTube will still happily flood your homepage with cute animal videos.

Anyway here’s a John Lewis ad with a (fake) cute animal in it:

(This particular video probably doesn’t have the SEO for cute animal videos, though.)

How old are you ? That RayBan advertisement you call a 'trend' is one of the most cringe things on the internet right now.
